Staying in Timaru offers a peaceful, scenic base with easy access to both local attractions and nearby destinations. Timaru itself is a charming town on the South Island's east coast, known for its beautiful beaches, parks, and Victorian architecture. Key highlights include Caroline Bay, a popular spot for swimming and picnics, as well as the South Canterbury Museum, which showcases the region's history and culture. The nearby Botanic Gardens provide a relaxing space with a range of plant species and walking paths. South Canterbury has it all, from beach, to forest, to mountains, it’s all accessible in one day.
Timaru also serves as a great hub for exploring the surrounding region. A 40-minute drive south will take you to the small, historic town of Oamaru, known for its well-preserved Victorian architecture and the blue penguin colony. About an hour and a half to the west is the Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, where you can experience stunning alpine scenery, hiking, and glacier tours. Additionally, the renowned wine region of Waipara is roughly an hour’s drive north, offering wine tastings and vineyard tours.
Tekapo, Wanka and Queenstown are all an easy drive from Timaru, ranging between 2-4 hours drive.
With its combination of local charm and access to natural wonders, Timaru makes for an excellent, central location to explore the wider Canterbury region.
