Home exchange and house swap holiday accommodation in ALSTONVILLE, BYRON BAY, BALLINA, NSW
I am a permaculture designer and teacher. Gerard is an author and researcher. We are looking forward to the birth of a grandson in April, in Sydney. Gerard and I have previously had careers in school teaching, mine in home economics and special education, and Gerard's mostly in primary. We are happily retired from all that and enjoy a more flexible lifestyle in which we can live and work anywhere and do the things that we enjoy. We are looking forward to staying in the Northern Beaches for an extended period in 2024 so we can spend this special time with our family.

Our house is a comfortable modern renovated home with open plan living and dining area. It is is not especially large and is easy to clean and maintain. The kitchen has European oven, steam oven, induction cooktop, dishwasher and all the gadgets.
Two bedrooms have walk-in robes. The smaller of the two, which we usually use for guests, has an ensuite. One bedroom is used as an office/library. The other is currently used as a spare bedroom and we can keep it as such or convert back to second office if guests prefer.
Our garden is an organic permaculture garden with numerous fruit trees, vege and herb beds, natives, potted plants and a worm farm. We also have 3 chickens but we will be rehousing them unless guests are experienced and happy to take on the daily responsibility. Guests are welcome to grow and harvest their food from the garden. Some garden care is needed (a little weeding, watering, composting and pruning) but there are no lawns to mow. We can organise someone to do garden work for a reasonable price if this is preferred.
We have feed-in solar power, solar hot water, reverse AC, front loader washing machine and tumble drier.
We have a lovely timber deck out the back of the house suitable for relaxing and entertaining. The neighbours are friendly and so is the surrounding neighbourhood.
We are a short walk to all the shops and facilities of the Alstonville township, including supermarket, cafes, pub, gym, pool and bookstore. A bus service operates between all the main towns, but you will find a car is pretty essential to get around.
We will upload photos as soon as possible.

Alstonville is on the lands of the Widjubul Wayabul people of the Bundjalung Nation.
The Alstonville Plateau contains some of the few remnants of the Big Scrub. You can see magnificent rainforest trees and spectacular countryside, formed from the volcanic eruptions of Wollumbin millions of years ago. If you are interested in natural history you will love exploring this area which is part of the Richmond-Tweed/ Scenic Rim sub-bioregion.
There are many interesting towns and villages in the region, including Nimbin, the site of the iconic 1973 Aquarius Festival.
Summerland Farm is a great place to visit with the kids, as is Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. There is also The Farm at Ewingsdale.
Boating and canoeing is available on the Richmond River and many great fishing spots.
There are countless places to go for camping or picnics including local beach locations, riverside, forests and reserves.
Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens can be found at Mullumbimby in the Byron Bay hinterland.
Byron Bay is a great place to visit for its beautiful beaches and great restaurants, cafes and shopping. It also has an excellent bookstore.
There are cinemas in Ballina and Byron Bay. If you are looking for nightlife, Byron is the place to go for nightclubs and a choice of live entertainment.
There is a coastal walking/cycle path that runs from Ballina to Lennox Head. I recommend you take the coastal walk from Skennars Head to East Ballina, where you can stop at a sacred site and read about some of our indigenous history.
There are guided Aboriginal tours available at Byron Bay and in the Hinterland.
Hot air ballooning is available at Byron Bay.
